Thieves have been scoring big in recent days in the city of Whiteville, hitting unlocked vehicles and even stealing two.
Lt. Scott Moody of the Whiteville Police said the thieves are taking advantage of unlocked vehicles to collect electronics, computers, tablets and especially firearms.
“Never leave a firearm in your car,” he said. “Take it inside when you get home, and lock your vehicle, even at home.”
Two vehicles that were stolen in recent days had been left unlocked with the keys inside, Moody said. Both vehicles were recovered and returned to the owners.
“We found one of the vehicles on the west side before the owner knew it was gone,” he said.
Car break-ins typically increase during the Christmas holidays, often because gifts are left in plain sight in vehicles. Moody said the simplest solution is the best.
“Lock your car, and don’t leave any valuables where they can be seen,” he said.
