Lake Waccamaw State Park is conducting a controlled burn today, and heavy smoke conditions may be present in some areas of the town.
Controlled burns help maintain the health of longleaf pine forests by clearing the undergrowth and providing needed nutrients for habitat-specific plants such as flytraps, sundews and others. The burns also help reduce the amount of pine straw, limbs and storm debris that can fuel wildfires.
Forest Service and local fire crews are working beside Parks personnel on the fires.
