Council to Consider Annexation Tonight

The sidewalk project currently underway in Whiteville is federally funded and being managed by the NCDOT.

New City Manager May Be Announced

Whiteville may grow by 130 acres if city council approves an application for voluntary annexation at tonight’s meeting.

AMC II, LLC, the owner of 233 Quail Drive, have filed a request for voluntary annexation of 130 acres along U.S. 701 Business.  The panning board forwarded the request with a positive endorsement Jan. 12.

AMC II is also requesting the property be rezoned from RA-20, Residential/Agriculture, to R-6 residential and B-3, Highway-serving Business.

The property is currently a mixture of farmland and residential. It is located between Gator Lane and U.S. 701 Business, north and east of the county government complex.

In the zoning application, the owner of the property says the land would remain residential, except for possible development along the road frontage.

If the council approves the application, a public hearing will be scheduled for February.

The board will also meet in executive session to discuss hiring a new city manager. An announcement of the new manager is expected at tonight’s meeting. Darren Currie officially retired from the post Dec. 31, after 11 years. City Finance Officer Colburn Brown has been serving as interim manager.

The board will also recognize three members of the Whiteville Police for attaining new certifications.
