Drainage Improvements Underway Downtown

Although streetwork slowed traffic in downtown Whiteville Wednesday, the work will eventually help keep traffic moving during inclement weather.

The N.C. Dept. of Transportation (DOT) has crews cleaning stormwater drains along Madison Street. The work caused some parking spaces to be blocked throughout the day, and led to a few backups, but officials said the lines will be cleared and when necessary, relined, to assist in faster runoff of stormwater in floodprone downtown.

The repairs and rehabilitation have a longterm effects as well. Better storm drains help extend the life of pavement and sidewalks. Opening the drains will also reduce the flood hazard to area businesses.

The work is expected to continue tomorrow. The city and DOT ask that motorists pay particular attention to workers and equipment that may be in the roadway, and do not drive around pylons or barricades.
