Second Time Wasn’t the Charm

Two alleged thieves went back for a second helping and were arrested by Whiteville Police Monday.

Clayton Xavier Benton, 23, and Harvey Elliot Harris, 23, were held under secured bonds. Benton was charged with felony conspiracy, felony aiding and abetting, and traffic violations. His address was listed on court documents as 203 Deer Run Estates, Whiteville.  Harris was charged with two counts of breaking, entering and larceny. His address was given as 345 Quail Dr., Whiteville.

Police were called to the 910 Vape and Tobacco at 603 Jefferson Street Sunday morning after an employee discovered the store had been entered during the night. The burglar alarm apparently did not activate, according to the report. More than $700 in tobacco and vape products were reported missing.

Early Monday, the alarm at the store sounded. A cash register worth $500 was taken in that break-in. Whiteville Police found a car in the area that matched the description of one spotted near the store around the time of the break-ins, and performed a traffic stop, arresting Benton and Harris around 3 a.m.
