Winter Storm Prep

This weekend brings the risk of our first winter storm of 2026 and with that comes advice and preparation from your friends here at ColumbusCountyNews.com.  While our  Chief Meteorologist Christopher Cawley has his eye on the storm path, we have made a list of things you need to prepare. The storm is still several days out, but it is always important to prepare now instead of later.

Items for Your Home and Family

– Medications: make sure you have attached least 7 days of medication refills available.

– Food: non perishable items such as beans, canned meat, crackers, snack items and bread are the most practical items. Anything that you don’t need electricity to maintain it’s freshness.

-Batteries: make sure your devices are charged, there are batteries in your flashlights, and you have a back up for your flashlight if those batteries die.

– Generator : if you don’t have a generator and are able to purchase one the next few days are ideal to do so. You can find them at most hardware stores like Lowe’s, Harbor Frieght, etc.

-Pets: bring your pets inside if possible. For larger animals ensure they have hay, shelter, and food accessible. Warming lamps for chickens and other small livestock can be found at our friends at Gurganus Feed and Grain along with all the supplies you need to care for your furry or feathered friends.

-Gas up your vehicle and heaters. Make sure to have gas for your generator as well.

-Keep an eye on loved ones, elderly, and if you know someone in need of a warm place to go consider the warming shelter at the Facts of Life church in Whiteville NC. 506 N. Lee Street, Whiteville NC. They will be open!

Stay prepared, stay safe, and keep an eye on ColumbusCountyNews.com as we cover this Winter Storm 2026.
