Winter Storm Watch Issued for Area

Officials and residents across Columbus are bracing for yet another round of winter weather, and this one appears to be targeting areas missed by last week’s storms.

Potentially heavy snow, 20 mile-per-hour winds and zero-degree windchills led the National Weather Service to issue a Winter Storm Watch for the southeast this morning (Thursday) to go into effect Friday.

Conditions are expected to deteriorate Friday night, with a possible mix of snow and freezing rain Saturday morning followed by from four to as much as ten inches of snow Saturday through Sunday. Extremely low temperatures will drive the windchill to single digits and possibly even below zero through Monday morning.

County commissioners will hold a special called emergency meeting tomorrow (Friday) at 8:15 a.m. to hear a briefing from emergency officials. Schools have not announced any changes at this time. The Dept. of Transportation began brining area roadways Wednesday.

The storm event is being compared to the snow and ice storm of January 2018, during which Lake Waccamaw froze over for only the third time in recorded history.

Some organizations are already adjusting their plans for the weekend. The Columbus Beekeeper Association has rescheduled its Beginning Beekeeping School for February. The school was set for Saturday. Send your announcements and closings to CCN.JWeaver@gmail.com or CCN.CFaircloth@gmail.com , and look  for the updated closing and delay list.

Meteorologist Christopher Cawley will be hosting a live update tonight at 7:15 p.m. on the Columbuscountynews.com Facebook page.
