West Columbus 50 North Duplin 49

CALYPSO—West Columbus squeezed out a victory over North Duplin 50-49 on Tuesday night. The win secured at least a tie for the Carolina Conference regular season title.

The Vikings finished the regular season with a 9-3 conference record and a 11-11 record overall. West Columbus is a half game ahead of East Columbus (8-3, 10-9), who will travel to East Bladen today (Thursday.)

North Duplin (7-4, 11-9) is tied for third in the conference with East Bladen. Both have a 7-4 conference record going into last regular season game. West Columbus will wait for the conference tournament seedings to see who their next opponent will be.

Whiteville 62 South Brunswick 37

WHITEVILLE—Whiteville jumped out to 28-4 lead before South Brunswick knew what had happened as the Wolfpack routed the Cougars Wednesday night 62-37.

It was the second victory in a row for the Pack, as they defeated Red Springs 58-35 on Tuesday night.

The Wolfpack lead early in the first quarter 8-4 when the went on a 20-0 run. South Brunswick never got in offensive sync during the contest. Whiteville extended the lead to 47-17 in the third quarter.

Tyron Legette led the pack with 14 points and Trayvionne Williams added 12 points. Corey Faison controlled the boards with 10 rebounds.

Whiteville moves to 5-4 in the Carolina Conference and 11-10 on the season. With a victory at South Columbus (1-8, 6-13) on Friday, the Wolfpack could move into a second-place tie with South Brunswick (6-3, 14-7), should the Cougars lose at West Bladen (9-0, 18-5) on Friday.

Fairmont is also in the mix with a 5-4 conference record. Should they beat Red Springs (1-8, 3-18) on Feb. 13, they could also finish in a tie for second place.

East Columbus 71 Hobbton 40

NEWTON GROVE—East Columbus pounced on Hobbton and never looked back as the Gators rolled the Wildcats 71-40 in boys’ basketball Friday night.

The Gators leapt to 18-2 first quarter lead and cruised to victory. KJ Thurman led East Columbus with 17 points and teammate Tyron Keaton added 10 points. Zay Hines controlled the glass as he pulled down 14 rebounds on the night.

A win against East Bladen (7-4, 7-14) tonight (Thursday) would push East Columbus onto a first place tie with county rival West Columbus (9-3, 11-11) for the Carolina Conference regular season title. Amir Tate led the Wildcats with 12 points. Hobbton (3-8. 5-14) will travel to Union (2-9, 4-16) today (Thursday.)

West Bladen 87 South Columbus 43

DUBLIN—West Bladen built an 18-point half-time lead in defeating South Columbus 87-43 in boys’ basketball Tuesday night.

Tylik McCall led the Knights with 19 points. The victory gave West Bladen the Southeastern Conference regular season title. The Knights are now 9-0 in the conference and 18-5 on the year. West Bladen continued their trademark stiff defense, forcing 28 turnovers on the night. West Baden will finish its regular season hosting South Brunswick (6-3, 14-7) on Friday, when South Columbus (1-8, 6-13) will host Whiteville (5-4, 11-10).

East Bladen 56 Lakewood 49

ELIZABETHTOWN—East Bladen pulled away in a tight game Tuesday night to beat Lakewood 56-49 in boys’ basketball. The win ensured the Eagles a home game in the first round of the Carolina Conference tournament next week.

Keyshawn Kemp led the Eagles with 25 points, who are now 7-4 In the conference and 7-14 on the season. East Bladen will travel to the Swamp to face East Columbus (8-3, 10-9) today (Thursday) in a key Carolina Conference battle for seeding. Lakewood (3-8, 7-14) will host North Duplin (7-4, 7-14) on today (Thursday).
