Former City Manager Darren Currie will be recognized Tuesday at the Whiteville City Council meeting.
Currie retired Dec. 31 after 11 years with the city and 30 years total in government service. He previously served as Lake Waccamaw Town Manager. Finance Officer Colburn Brown is serving as interim manager until march 9, when Sean Martin takes over.
Council will also hold a public earing on a rezoning and annexation request for the 200 block of Quail Drive. The 130 acre parcel is currently in the city’s ETJ. The owners are requesting it be annexed into the city, and be rezoned for single family residential and highway serving business uses.
The board will also be asked to sign off on a finding of the latest audit. The audit came under scrutiny due to more than $1 million in assets that were not included in the original audit due to the timing of the acquisition of Vineland Station. The audit also noted cost overruns in several areas, leading to budget discrepancies. In its finding letter to the Local Government Commission, the city council acknowledges the error, and lays out plans to avoid future problems, as well as using increasing the fund balance from 27 percent to the required 34 percent.
Tuesday’s meeting is at 6:30 p.m. and may be attended in. person at City Hall or viewed online.
