Quick work by a Columbus County deputy prevented a grass fire from damaging a home Monday.
Sgt. Jeffrey Thomas was escorting a funeral procession along Greens Mill Road when he saw a fast moving grass fire in the 2000 block, according to a report with the sheriff’s office. The report said Thomas noticed the fire was “spreading quickly due to dry grass and wind,” and he stopped to help.
The fire was endangering a home and several other structures, the report said. Thomas used a fire extinguisher to defend a residence while calling for an “expedited” response from North Whiteville Fire. The VFD was on the scene in minutes and extinguished the flames.
The Fire Marshal’s Office and Detective Division are investigating the case.
