Jack Frost may be sticking around for a bit, but Columbus County is keeping the streets hot with events throughout the entire month of February. Donate to a worthy cause, learn a new skill, or inspire yourself and others to do great things in the weeks to come. Check out all things going on around you in this edition of The Good News.

The Angel House in Whiteville provides a comforting environment during difficult times to patients and their loved ones, and your generosity can help ensure that families have access to food and refreshments during visits. The Care Center Family Kitchen needs donations of canned sodas, bottled water, individual bags of chips, Little Debbie Cakes, individually wrapped cookies, Lance Crackers, and K-cups for the Keurig coffee maker.

The Lake Waccamaw State Park Visitor’s Center will soon see some handmade items on display at the facility. Ashley Lomboy of the Waccamaw Siouan STEM Studio has loaned these indigenous articles to the center for a time to help educate visitors about the rich culture of the tribe.
The Chadbourn Community Library and the Columbus County EFNEP are partnering up for an exciting program for children this month. Every Wednesday at 4 p.m., the library will open its door for a kids’ cooking class for grades 3-5.
The session will be held starting today, Feb. 4, with other gatherings planned for Feb. 11, 18, and 25. Spots are limited, so parents are asked to stop by the library to sign your child up, or you can give them a call 910.654.3322. The library is located at 301 North Wilson Street in Chadbourn.

Storytime is back at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences at Whiteville with even more time to share the love of reading. The program will take place on Thursdays and Saturdays every first and third week of the month from 10:30-11 a.m.
The new format will kick off tomorrow, Feb. 5, with an alligator themed Storytime. The museum’s address is 415 South Madison Street in Whiteville.
Palmyra Missionary Baptist Church will be hosting the Men’s Wildlife fellowship dinner on Saturday, Feb. 7, at 4 p.m. All Baptist men from area churches are encouraged to attend. Pastor Chris Stanley will be the guest speaker. The church can be found at 12753 New Britton Highway East in Old Dock.

Mark your calendars for Sunday, Feb. 8, at 3 p.m. for a book signing with author T.A. Spencer and his new novel ‘Where the Cypress Weeps.’ The program will be held at the Lake Waccamaw Depot in collaboration with the museum, library, and several book clubs in the area. Refreshments will be served after the program.
The museum can be found at 201 Flemington Drive in the town of Lake Waccamaw.
Just when you think there couldn’t be any more good news coming from out of the Lake area, the municipality is popping in with another surprise. Long time librarian Kim Holmes will be retiring from the Rube McCray Memorial Library.
The Friends of the RMML with be hosting a small gathering with refreshments for her on Feb. 9, and a brief program will begin at 4 p.m. The library is located at 301 Flemington Drive.
Finders Keepers Thrift Store in Whiteville is now collecting donations of new baby essentials for the Living Hope Pregnancy Center. Items needed include diapers, wipes, baby wash and shampoo, and onesies (new with tags).
The drive will end on Feb. 9, and donations can be dropped off at the store located at 1138 South Madison Street in Whiteville.

Congratulations are in order for student AJ McGhee at the Columbus Career and College Academy. McGhee placed third in the Columbus County Schools Poetry Out Loud Competition. With his finish, the young man and the other two finalists will move on to the state competition in Charlotte, N.C. on Feb. 28.

The Columbus County Beekeepers Association has rescheduled Beginning Beekeeping School until Feb. 13-15 at the N.C. Cooperative Extension in Whiteville. The Feb. 13 session will meet from 6-9 p.m., the gathering on Feb. 14 will run from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., and the wrap-up will be Feb. 15 from 9 a.m.- 1 p.m.
The cost is $70 and includes county and state membership. The fee does not cover the book, and those who planned to attend are encouraged to purchase ‘Beekeeping for Dummies’ through Amazon or Dandant.
The class will also cover material for the written and practical exam for those seeking to get their N.C. Beekeeping Certification, but you don’t have to take the exam to enjoy the program. The required PPE field day will be held at a later date.

If you’re still making plans for Valentines Day with your loved one, then consider planning a dinner date for a good cause. The Lightkeepers at Safe Harbor Baptist Church will be hosting a spaghetti dinner fundraiser to support their youth group.
The event will be held on Feb. 14 at 3 p.m. at the church, and you can dine in or carry out. Plates are $10 each and include spaghetti, salad, dessert, and your choice of tea, lemonade, or water. The church’s address is 27001 Andrew Jackson Highway in Delco.

The Columbus County Farmers Market will be hosting their Valentines Day event on Feb. 14 from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Celebrate love, local flavor, and fresh finds with produce, handmade crafts and gifts, sweet treats, and baked goods.
While picking out those last-minute goodies for your sweetheart, you can also plan a surprise dinner. Pre-order Valentines Day meals will also be available at the market.

Put on your thinking caps and join the Southeastern Swap Stewards for the Wildlife Trivia and Chapter Interest Meeting on Feb. 24 from 6-7 p.m. Come out to this free event and test your knowledge against other nature enthusiasts to win prizes and bragging rights.
Learn about wildlife in a fun way and find out how you can join the stewards in their mission to protect the animals and natural resources in our area. The event will be held at Penn’s Grill located at 128 East Commerce Street in Whiteville.
It’s always important to be prepared, and the Sheep Dog Foundation wants to empower and inspire women to protect themselves. On Saturday, March 7, the organization will be holding the Women’s Defensive Handgun Beginner Pew ‘N Que from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.
The workshop will focus on real world information, hands on instruction, motivation, encouragement, and food. More gatherings are planned in the future, so consider joining up with the SDF’s Women’s Self-Defense and Social Club. Membership is absolutely free.
