Area Baseball Roundup: Whiteville Outlasts East Columbus in Pitchers’ Duel

Whiteville 2, East Columbus 0

LAKE WACCAMAW—Layton McLean won the pitchers’ duel in The Swamp as Whiteville outlasted East Columbus 2-0 in baseball on Friday night.

McLean went six and two-thirds innings while striking out 13 batters in the win. Colin Hooks led the bats for the Pack, going 2-4, scoring a run, and producing an RBI. Jake Odham went two for four with a run scored also for Whiteville.

Gauge Simmons pitched a brilliant game in the loss for the Gators, going 6 and 2/3 innings, striking out seven, and only allowing six hits. Adrion Jenrette went two for three for East Columbus at the plate. The Wolfpack (4-1) will host the Gators (3-1) in a rematch on Monday night in Whiteville.

West Bladen 5, Clinton 4

CLINTON—West Bladen broke open a 0-0 game going into the fifth inning to defeat Clinton 5-4 Friday in baseball.

The Knights scored two runs in the fifth and three runs in the sixth inning to go up 5-0 on the Dark Horses. Clinton (3-1) scored a pair of runs in the sixth and seventh innings to close the gap for the final score. Hunter Hester and Jackson Smith led the bats for the Knights with two hits each.

Clinton’s Brennon Bell went 2-2 at the plate. Josh Slater went four innings and gave up two runs for the Dark Horses. The Knight will face Terry Sanford (2-1) in Fayetteville on Saturday. Clinton (3-1) will travel to (2-3) on Tuesday.

West Brunswick 4, East Bladen 3

SHALLOTTE—Coach Greg Wrape picked up his first win of the season as West Brunswick defeated East Bladen 5-4 on Friday night.

The Trojans won the game in grand fashion as Wesley Wilson hit an RBI single with two out in the seventh inning with the game tied 4-4. The Eagles had rallied to tie the game in the top of the seventh inning.

West Brunswick goes to 1-3 with the victory. The Trojans will host Laney (4-0) on Tuesday. East Bladen (1-2) will host Clinton (3-1) on Tuesday.

 

West Columbus 8, Fairmont 3

CERRO GORDO—West Columbus defeated Fairmont 8-3 in baseball on Friday night. It was the second win of the season for Coach Greg Hammond’s Vikings.

Jahan Powell hit a triple for the Vikings (2-1). West Columbus will travel to Union (0-5) on Tuesday. Fairmont will host St. Paul’s (0-2) on March 10.
