Madden Announces Retirement

Eddie Madden

County Manager Eddie Madden announced Wednesday that he will retire in December.

Until then, Madden said, he is still on the job he has held for five years. He is looking forward to having more quality time with his family.

“My focus right now is on the county,” he said, “but I hope to spend more time after retirement with my family.”

Madden said he will have plenty to do when he heads home Dec. 30. His youngest son is very active in sports, Scouting, and music, and Madden plans to spend more time with his father as well as his wife, children and grandchildren.

“My wife and I have two grandchildren and my oldest daughter and son-in-law have another one on the way. I hope to spend as much time with them as I can.

“I am very thankful and proud of my family and I don’t want to miss out on life experiences with each of them.”

Madden is known for community work during emergencies, such as organizing meals for search crews during a boating accident at Lake Waccamaw. He also spent multiple days in the North Carolina mountains in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, assisting with ground relief efforts as well as helping local governments bring services back online.

Madden says retirement isn‘t the end of his working years.

“I am still a young man and I enjoy working so I will probably transition to something else in the future,” he said. “We own a small farm that I enjoy working on and I look forward to more time on my tractor.”
