Saturation Patrol Leads to 41 Citations, Two DWI Arrests

A crackdown on dangerous drivers with 41 officers from multiple agencies led to 41 charges Friday in Clarendon.

The Columbus Couny Sheriff’s Office worked with the Highway Patrol, Robeson and Brunswick sheriff’s offices, and police from Lumberton, Jacksonville and Whiteville on the operation. The Dept. of Health and Human Services Blood Alcohol Testing (BAT) Mobile Unit was also deployed. The effort was part of the Governor’s Highway Safety Program (GHSP) efforts to reduce impaired and unsafe driving.

“The purpose of this operation was simple but critical,” Sheriff Bill rogers said in a press release. “We were there to ensure compliance with motor vehicle laws and to reduce motor vehicle crashes, injuries, and fatalities associated with impaired driving.”

Deputies, Troopers and officers worked two shifts – from 8-9 p.m., then from 9 p.m. until midnight. The first group tallied 17 citations, with one driving while impaired (DWI) charge. The second group collected 24, including one DWI, three fugitives and multiple traffic violations.

“Operations like this are not about writing tickets,” Rogers said. “They are about preventing tragedies before they happen. Impaired driving and motor vehicle violations continue to be leading causes of serious crashes. Through proactive enforcement and strong interagency partnerships, we remain committed to keeping the roads of Columbus County safe for everyone.
“If you choose to drive — drive responsibly.”
