Buttercups are blooming in anticipation of the arrival of spring, and Columbus County is on the go with plenty of activities to keep you busy. Get the kids signed up for Troop Hard Charger, volunteer to clean up a trail, or show off your master chef skills in a chili cook-off. The Sheep Dog Foundation is now accepting kids ages 8-12 years into Troop Hard Charger. The veteran lead military style program teaches kids athletics, survival, martial arts, trades and more. Uniforms and gear will be issued.

As spring approaches, a tiny hero vital to the world will be out and about all over Columbus County. It’s honeybee swarm season, and if you see a group of displaced pollinators, call a local beekeeper to come help relocate the essential buzzy beauties.

The Chadbourn Community Library will have a hot sale on March 6 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. The plates are $10 each and come with two hot dogs, a cookie, a bag of chips, and a drink.

Speaking of libraries, an opportunity for the community to borrow, exchange, or share books will be coming to Whiteville. The Sharing Shelf will allow folks to inspire learning and connection through the love of reading at the Mt. Olive High School Multipurpose Center.

The Columbus Baptist Association will continue their revival at Peace Baptist Church through March 7 at 7 p.m. each evening.
Speakers will include Stephen Nobles, Ben Worthington, Colton Reaves, and Glenn Stanley. The church can be found at 653 Love Mill Road in Whiteville.
There will be more opportunities to shop at the Columbus County Farmers Market this coming year. The market and its vendors will be open Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 9 a.m.- 3 p.m. Folks will be set up with produce, breads, spices, jewelry, and everything in between.
The market can be found at 132 Government Complex Drive in Whiteville.

Coastal Land Trust will host a Volunteer Trail Day on March 7 in Sandyfield. Participants will help clear the trail, pick up trash, and use hand tools for maintenance and improvement. Tools, snacks, gloves, and water will be provided.

Michael ‘Buddy Boy’ Thomas, beloved member of the Southern Sizzler family for over a decade, has passed on, and his family needs our help to pay for his final expenses. The restaurant will be holding a fundraiser plate sale on March 9 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., and one hundred percent of the proceeds will be given to the cause.
The plates are $10 each and will include BBQ chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans, a roll, and a slice of cake. Delivery is available by calling 910.207.8432. Southern Sizzler is located at 1405 South Madison Street in Whiteville.
The Diaper Bank of North Carolina will be partnering with the Columbus County Department of Aging on March 12 to host the DBNC Essentials Hub from 12-1:30 p.m. at the Columbus County Senior Center.
They will be giving away free adult incontinence supplies to residents, and folks are asked to bring their own bags to the event. Supplies are limited and based on a first come, first serve basis. The center can be found at 827 Washington Street in Whiteville.
The Veterans Benefits Administration will be at the Veterans Memorial Park of America again this weekend on March 13 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. There is limited availability, and those interested are asked to call 910.840.5207 for an appointment.
Refreshments for vets will be served at the event. The park is located at 6354 James B. White Highway South in Whiteville.

The Lake Waccamaw Depot Museum will be hosting a Chilli Cook-Off on March 13 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. There will be hot prizes for the best chili. If you don’t want to participate in the contest but would like to take part of the Railroad Dinner, bring a side dish or dessert and cheer on the competitors.

The North Whiteville Volunteer Fire Department is gearing up again for their second annual Community Day. The free event will be held on March 14, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
The day will include fire truck displays and demonstrations, activities for kids, a free hotdog lunch, community resources, and a chance to meet local firefighters. Community Day will be hosted at 747 Peacock Road in Whiteville.
The sixteenth annual Southern Farm Days will be back March 20-22 at the Boys and Girls Home of NC Horse Complex. Columbus County News will be live during the event, and we would love to spotlight your small business.

The Family Birthing Center at Columbus Regional Healthcare System is inviting expectant mothers in their third trimester and their partners to attend birthing classes at the facility. Space is limited, but they will accommodate all interested participants.
The class will include topics like what to expect during your birth experience, the benefits of breastfeeding and how to be successful, a tour of the center, and a meet and greet with the staff. Refreshments will be served at each session.
The event is free, and each session will run from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Classes are scheduled for the following dates:

Edgewood Elementary’s Jr. FFA will be taking orders for their fern sale through March 25. The plants will arrive on April 1 just in time for Easter, and you can pick them up at the school, or several of the kids will even deliver them to your door.
The ferns are $12.50 each, and you can either reach out to the school or contact a member of the Jr. FFA to get yours.
