Two Receive Local Government Awards

Two Columbus County men were recognized by the Cape Fear Council of Governments last week for their years of public service.

Local leaders and state officials gathered at the Terraces on Sir Tyler on Feb. 26 to celebrate the 53rd Annual Meeting and Awards Banquet of the Cape Fear Council of Governments (CFCOG).

Randolph Keaton

The Workforce Development Regional Impact Award went to Sandyfield Town Councilman Randolph Keaton. He also serves on Cape Fear Workforce Development Board. Keaton was recognized for his impactful community leadership advancing workforce development and expanding upward mobility for youth. His service to workforce initiatives has strengthened the Board’s strategic efforts to connect people and jobs.

Darren Currie

The Local Government Services Impact Award went to Darren Currie, retired Whiteville City Manager. Currie was celebrated for his distinguished career and leadership at the Town of Lake Waccamaw and the City of Whiteville, marking a legacy of service to the entire Cape Fear region. Currie is currently interim town manager for the town of Lake Waccamaw.

Also receiving awards from the COG were Derissa Gore of Brunswick County Senior Resources and Jack Morris, outreach coordinator for the Wilmington Downtown Inc. Block by Block program.

The awards highlight “the extraordinary talent and heart within our local governments and region.” The COG said in a press release. “Each recipient represents the best of public service in the Cape Fear region.”

Founded in 1968, the Cape Fear Council of Governments is a regional organization serving the 44 local governments in Brunswick, Columbus, New Hanover, and Pender counties by providing a variety of technical assistance and regional solutions.
