County Approves Lake Rescue Request

Whiteville Rescue will now provide EMS service to the Lake Waccamaw Fire District.

County commissioners on Monday approved a request from Lake Waccamaw to subcontract with Whiteville Rescue to provide EMS service at the lake and in its fire district. Lake Waccamaw shut down its own EMS service recently as a cost-cutting measure.

Whiteville Rescue Unit will station personnel and equipment at Lake Waccamaw’s fire station on Flemington Drive at no cost to the county, according to Mayor Greg Jacob’s proposal to the commissioners. County funding allocated to the town for EMS would be used to pay Whiteville Rescue instead of Lake Waccamaw Fire and Rescue.

“Given the community’s aging population, access to paramedic level service remains a high priority for both the Town commissioners and local residents,” Jacobs wrote to the board.

The town had contracted with the county for EMS service in the wake of shutting down its own emergency medical response. Lake Waccamaw also provided coverage that overlapped with Buckhead, Whiteville and ADR, as well as providing EMS service in the county during emergencies.

The measure was passed without discussion.
