Here’s today’s Bottom Line:
BURN BAN REMAINS IN PLACE!!!
The latest drought monitor has hit the streets and … it’s not good news anywhere in the State of North Carolina.
Rainfall has been almost nonexistent. We had some thunderstorms on Easter, but that was the first measured rainfall in Whiteville since March 16. And it’ll be the last measured rainfall in Whiteville until AT LEAST April 17th.
Yes you read that correctly.
Let’s take a look at the “rainfall percent of normal” over the past 30 days.
What you see here is somewhat misleading. It looks like portions of Brunswick, New Hanover, and Pender counties have had around 100% of normal… but all of that fell on Easter Sunday as that squall line went through. Take Easter away, and the results would be a lot more darker orange.
The southern half of Columbus County has received 25% to 50% of the normal rain over the past 30 days. The beaches of Horry County have only received 10% to 25%!! Much of Bladen County has received 50% to 75%, but again, that was aided and abetted by the thunderstorms received on Easter.
The bottom line is that we’re in a stunning drought. Breaking the current drought will require roughly 6 to 11+ inches of rain over a 1- to 3-month period to reverse long-term precipitation deficits. While 4+ inches are needed to provide immediate relief to crops and soil, a long-term, slow-soaking rain is necessary to avoid flooding. Although heavy rain would end the dry spell, a quick deluge causes significant runoff and flash flooding instead of soaking into the soil.
Either way, none of that is happening through the foreseeable future. At least the next 10 days.
Back to the weather at-hand… nothing but sunshine with temperatures warming a little each day… until we’re at or above 90 by the middle of next week as the huge ridge of high pressure refuses to budge.
