ROCKY POINT—East Columbus showed strong defense with a pick-six win at the buzzer Thursday night as they beat Heide Trask 12-6 in football.
At Heide Trask, the first half was scoreless for both teams. Demetrius Dexter of East Columbus found an errant pass from Titans’ quarterback Gabe Van Vliet in the third quarter to set up the Gators first score of the game. Ryan Cobb ran it in to give the Gators a 6-0 advantage. Heide Trask responded with a score later in the third quarter to tie at 6-6.
The Gators then showed why this may be a historic season.
On the last play of the game, the East Columbus defense recorded a pick-6 from their own 15-yard line to score the 12-6 victory with the 85-yard interception.
East Columbus (2-0) will host Chatham Central (2-0) on Sept. 4, and Heide Trask (0-2) will travel to Boiling Springs to face South Brunswick (0-2).
According to MaxPreps, the Gators have never started a season unbeaten after two games since the 2003-04 football season. The 2012 Gator squad started that year 3-1 on their way to a 9-5 record, losing to Albemarle 19-18 in the third round of the 1A playoffs.
