WHITEVILLE—The Whiteville Wolfpack held off West Brunswick 39-36 in an offensive showcase in Legion Stadium on Thursday night. If you are a fan of scoring and statistics, this was a must-see game.
Wolfpack Sophomore Luke McLean threw for two touchdowns and ran for another. Ty’Lae Rose chewed up the ground again for the Pack with 190 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries. Teron Legette scored a touchdown on offense and took a fumble recovery to the house for Whiteville on defense. Trayvionne Williams and Jaden Todd both were on the receiving end of McLean passes.
Now on the Trojan side of the ball, they found the endzone often as well. West Brunswick’s Matoshi Lance ran for 242 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries. Senior quarterback Josiah Barton had 153 total yards in the air and on the ground and a pair of touchdowns runs for the Trojans.
Whiteville came out on fire at the start of the game 18-0 before the Trojans could blink. McLean found Legette for a touchdown pass and Rose ran one in. Rose crossed the goal-line again with 4:20 left in the first quarter to push the Wolfpack ahead 18-0.
West Brunswick came to life when quarterback Josiah Barton toted the ball 77 tards to the endzone to put the Trojans on the scoreboard. Trojans back Ethan Winship ran another touchdown in and was followed by a Marzell Stanley rushing touchdown to tie the game at 18-18.
The game was a slugfest throughout the remainder of the contest with Whiteville’s Legette making a long fumble recovery for a score being the key play in the second half.
The Wolfpack (2-0) will go to Elizabethtown this week to take on East Bladen (2-0). West Brunswick falls to 1-1 on the season. The Trojans will host North Myrtle Beach (2-0) on Sept. 4.
