South Takes West in Thursday Matchup

CERRO GORDO– South Columbus visited Cerro Gordo Thursday and defeated West Columbus 28-8 in a cross-county rivalry in football.

Cam Bellamy gave the Stallions the early lead with 4:58 in the first quarter with a 16-yard run to the endzone. In the second quarter, the Stallions added to their score as Preston Dagger hauled in a 14-yard pass from Jaxon Greene with 14 second left in the half to push the lead to 14-0 with the two-point conversion.

The Vikings had no problem moving the ball during the night but couldn’t put in on the scoreboard. The Stallions added to their lead with 4:16 in the third quarter as Jaxon Green found Gentry Thompson for his second touchdown pass of the night from three yards out to give South Columbus a 20-0 advantage.

In the fourth quarter, Greene passed for his third TD on the night from 41 yards out. Gentry Thompson brought home the two-point conversion with 9:39 left in the ballgame. Xavier Savage scored for West Columbus late in the game to make the final score South Columbus 28, West Columbus 8.

The Vikings (0-2) will host West Bladen (0-1) on Sept. 4 while South Columbus (1-1) goes to Loris, S.C. (1-0) to face the Lions.
