The North Carolina Yam Festival is shaping up to be a wonderful time in Tabor City.
The festival month of October begins with the annual Miss North Carolina Yam Festival Scholarship Pageant this Saturday. It will be held at South Columbus High School, located at 40 Stallion Drive, Tabor City.
The doors at South Columbus High School will open at 3 p.m. The Pageant will begin at 4 p.m. The admission fee of $10 includes a program. As in years past, children 5 years old and younger may attend at no cost.
We will begin accepting entries for the Sweet Potato Quality Contest on Friday, Oct. 16. Youth and adult entries may be dropped off at the0 Tabor City Public Library located at 101 East Fifth Street from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
Sweet Potato Quality Contest entries will be judged on Monday, Oct. 19. Again, the location is the Tabor City Public Library, 101 East Fifth Street, downtown Tabor City. Youth and adult entries will be accepted until 8:30 a.m. Judging begins promptly at 9 a.m. Winners will be announced as soon as possible via Facebook.
We have one more event to highlight in this week’s column, the Business and Residential Decorating Contest. Everyone is encouraged to decorate. The goal is to make our town look as festive as possible!
First, second, and third places will be awarded in Business and Residential. That’s just a bonus. The real award is knowing that you helped contribute to Tabor City’s festive spirit for the Yam Festival events and for Yam Fest Saturday.
Keep in mind that there is no theme, just our motto: “Let’s Have A Yam Good Time”. To enter, please call 910.377.3248 by 4 p.m. on Monday, October 19. Judging will begin at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 20.
