Here’s today’s Bottom Line
Heat, humidity, and thunderstorms. How many times have I typed those words this summer?
High pressure slips farther south and east off the coast allowing a hot and humid flow of Gulf moisture to push northeast up the coast today. We have a slight chance for thunderstorms this afternoon as a bit of moisture pushes in off the Atlantic.
A cold front takes its sweet time approaching the area and eventually stalls out somewhere over the state this weekend. An increasingly unstable and humid atmosphere will combine with heating and the sea-breeze boundary to kick off scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms over the weekend.
There’s some question about the rain chances. If you look at the national blend of models, that would point to a 70% to 80% chance for rain over the weekend. However, if you look at the traditional GFS and European deterministic runs, you’d drop the POP down to about 40%. I’m splitting the difference and going with 50% Friday, 60% on Saturday, and 50% on Sunday.
Unseasonably warm temperatures will continue well into next week with highs remaining in the 90s, and heat index values over 100…… certainly quite unusual for mid-September. Lower-end thunderstorm chances — the typical summertime regime.
TROPICS: A significant amount of Sahara dust will continue to push over the central Atlantic. This, combined with significant shear triggered by El Nino, means no Atlantic tropical activity is anticipated over the next 7-10 days.
