Heavy equipment that disappeared from a Clarendon construction site has been recovered near Four Oaks.

Sheriff Jody Greene said in a press release that on Aug. 4, a Caterpillar mini excavator and Vermeer trencher were stolen from beside the road in Clarendon while a job was being completed. The equipment is owned by KBS Construction of Fremont.

Investigators used surveillance video from several locations to identify the suspect vehicle, direction and times, the release said. Further investigation indicated a possible location in Johnston County. Deputies searched several locations near Four Oaks before finding the mini-excavator in a cornfield behind a hog farm, and the trencher hidden in another field. The machinery has been returned to the victim.

The investigation is continuing. Greene offered his thanks to Sheriff Steve Bizzell and the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance.
