Whiteville could see “dramatic” improvements in its water and wastewater systems, if the city is approved for two additional federal grants.
At tonight’s city council meeting, City Manager Darren Currie will discuss applications for more than $9 million in American Rescue Plan (ARP) funding. The funds would be in addition to more than $11 million in ARP funding already obtained by Whiteville, according to Currie’s memo to the council.
One of the grants would replace water and sewer lines along Thompson Street, where pipe failures have caused multiple low spots in the pavement. An application for a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) for that project was recently turned down.
“For the sewer improvements,” Currie wrote, “this will represent approximately $7 million in work on the system. For the water improvements, it will represent $2.25 million on the water system. These two applications are valued at $9.25 Million.”
The improvements would be a major step forward for the city, Currie wrote.
“If the City can be funded for these projects, it will be a gamechanger for the City. Our systems are in poor health. This will be in addition to the $11.2 million is sewer funding that the city has already obtained in previous awards.”
Council will be asked to approve resolutions to apply for the funding at Tuesday’s meeting.
