After more than two weeks of testimony it took four hours for a Columbus County Jury to find Daquon Rollo Carrothers guilty of first degree murder today (Oct. 10).
Corrothers was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole in the shooting death of Alex Moore in 2020.
Moore’s father filed a missing person’s report with the sheriff’s office on Jan. 28, 2020. Relatives and law enforcement found his Chevrolet S-10 truck at the Jones Memorial Cemetery, just across the Bladen County line in Farmers Union. An extensive ground and air search utilizing helicopters, dogs and search teams produced no clues about Moore’s disappearance.
Investigator Paul Rockenbach worked with the State Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Bureau to review cell phone records and text messages that placed Moore at Corrothers’ home Jan. 27. The Columbus County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant on the home on Hallsboro Road North, where they found Moore’s body in a “shallow, watery grave,” according to the district attorney’s office. He had been shot eight times and had multiple abrasions.
Moore’s family told the court that they have suffered substantial grief and loss due to the death.
Chief Assistant District Attorney Allan Adams and ADA Courtney Sanford prosecuted the case, with the assistance of victim witness coordinator Amanda Parker. Superior Court Judge Tiffany Powers presided. Corrothers was represented by J.B. Lee.
