Uninsured and underinsured people with a history of smoking can be screened for lung cancer for free Friday.
The Lung Bus will be at Hills Plaza Shopping Center near Roses on Madison Street in Whiteville from 9 a.m. until 11 p.m. The Lung Bus offers low dose CT-screenings for lung cancer. Results will be sent to the patient’s doctor.
The program is specifically designed for Medicaid recipients, as well as the uninsured and underinsured who might opt out of costly scans during tegular doctor visits.
The Lung Bus is also providing free nicotine replacements and smoking cessation counseling.
To qualify for the free screening, patients must be 55-77 years old, have the equivalent of a 20-year, two pack a day smoking habit, and be a smoker or have smoked in the last 15 years.
Some patients may also qualify for a clinical trial.
The Lung Bus is a program of the Levine cancer Institute, and visits Whiteville several times per year.
