A Whiteville whitetail deer is free and clear after some help from firefighters this morning.
Whiteville Emergency Services Director Hal Lowder said emergency crews were called to a Fuller Street home this morning (Wednesday) after the yearling buck got stuck in a metal fence.
”He was apparently trying to get through and couldn’t quite make it,” Lowder said.
Residents called 911 after finding the exhausted, frightened deer. Fire crews used an extrication tool to spread the bars of the fence, allowing the deer to escape. The “spreader” is usually used to gain access to victims in car crashes, but in this case rescued a four-hooved victim
Deer are a common sight in many residential neighborhoods in the city.
Lowder said the buck didn’t stop to thank firefighters, “but was happy to get out of there.”
