Deputies following up on complaints about suspicious activity in Hallsboro arrested a man after an extended offroad chase Tuesday.

Ricky Levell Mitchell, 34, was held under no bond on charges of felony fleeing to elude arrest, felony possession with intent to manufacture, sell and deliver cocaine and prescription pills, assault ion a government official, and maintaining a vehicle for drug activities, according to detention center records.

The Columbus County Sheriff’s Office Vice Narcotics Unit was following up on narcotics complaints in the eastern end of Columbus County, when the detectives made a vehicle stop on Hallsboro Road near the Andrew Jackson Highway Overpass. The driver of the vehicle, Mitchell, failed to produce identification and sped away from the traffic stop in his vehicle, the press release said.

The narcotics detectives began a pursuit of the suspect vehicle on Hallsboro Road North, and onto Old Northeast Road.  The driver of the vehicle led the chase for several miles at high speeds, both off road and back onto pavement in the St. James community.

Narcotics detectives were joined by H.E.A.T Deputies at which point the chase led off road again, continuing down J and B Campbell Drive.

After approximately three miles down the dirt private drive, the subject fled the vehicle on foot and was taken into custody. A search of the vehicle yielded cocaine, and prescription pills.

Mitchell was out on bond from previous charges and was given no bond at the time of this arrest.

Sheriff W.A. “Bill” Rogers emphasized that “it is our goal to remove these harmful drugs, in the hands of violent individuals, from our streets.

“The Columbus County Sheriff’s Office is working diligently from Boardman to Riegelwood and everywhere in between to keep our streets safe.”
