A Whiteville area man is recovering after he was allegedly shot by his girlfriend during an argument.

Julie Ann Crampton, 36, of 580 Mt. Moriah Church Rd., Whiteville, is being held under $250,000 secured bond on a single charge of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, inflicting serious injury.
Crampton is alleged to have shot Floyd Angus Jr. after an argument Saturday.

Deputies were called to Columbus Regional around 10  p.m. Sunday to a report of a gunshot victim. Angus had a single gunshot wound to the right elbow, and was in “an altered mental state.” Hospital staff told investigators the bullet was still inside his arm. Angus was transferred to a trauma center for specialized care.

Angus told deputies that he and Crampton were arguing over the telephone while he was working on a tractor at his home.

“After exiting the tractor and entering his wood cabin, the argument continued in person,” she sheriff’s office reported.

Crampton allegedly struck Angus multiple times in the face and head. He shoved her away, the report said. Crampton then allegedly retrieved a handgun from under a pillow and shot at Angus as he fled out the front door. He was struck in the elbow, but managed to hide under a truck.

Angus told deputies he saw Crampton go toward a creek on the property, still carrying the handgun. He then ran to a neighbor’s home and dialed 911.

Crampton was later arrested at her home on Mt. Moriah Church Road. Bond was set at $250,000 according to detention center records, but that bond was put on a domestic violence hold.

Angus’ condition was not immediately available.
