A teenager has been charged in the county’s fourth fatal car crash this year.
Nathan Hester, 18, of Whiteville, was charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle after he was released from an area hospital, according to the Highway Patrol.
First Sgt. A. Pait said the crash occurred on Red Store Road around 6:09 p.m. Tuesday. Hester was traveling south in a 2006 Toyota SUV when he went off the right, overcompensated and crossed the centerline. The SUV struck a 2003 Toyota passenger car driven by Cornell Singletary head-on.
The SUV continued off the roadway, overturned and came to rest in a ditch, Pait said. Singletary’s vehicle landed in a nearby yard.
Singletary was not wearing a seatbelt, and was dead on the scene. Hester sustained minor injuries.
Trooper M. D. Locklear investigated the crash.
