Contests Line Up in Some Races

While both city school board candidates and one in the county are unopposed, two hopefuls have filed for the county school board seat held by Randy Coleman.

Randy Coleman announced early this month that he does not plan to seek reelection. Coleman endorsed newcomer Emily Parks Grice of Riegelwood for the County District 1 seat.

Charles Henry Jacobs Jr. has filed for the seat as well. Jacobs lives in Bolton.

Steve Long does not have any competition for the District 5 county school board seat. In the city, Jackie Ray Pierce is unchallenged for District 3, and incumbent Greg Merritt is the only candidate in the District 4 city race. The District 3 seat is currently held by Candle Rogers, who chose not to seek reelection.

Gary Simmons of the Chadbourn area and Walter Strickland of Cerro Gordo are ion the ballot for the two seats on the Soil and Water Conservation board.

Incumbents James Hammond, Josh Simmons, and Christian Wright will be on the ballot with newcomer Shonda Carroll for the Columbus-Riegelwood Sanitary District.

The filing period ends at noon Aug. 5.
