Badcock Furniture to Close All Stores

A century-plus old furniture retailer is under Chapter 11 and will be closing all its stores across the country, including Whiteville.

Badcock Furniture and More, located on South Madison Street, is among the hundreds of Badcock and Conn’s stores across eight states affected by the pending closure. The company’s official social media pages and website simply say that Badcock is going out of business, and all inventory is for sale at up to 50 percent off.

An employee who answered the phone at the Whiteville store said the local Badock is “under liquidation,” and a closing date has not been set.

The firm was founded in Florida in 1904 by Henry Stanhope Badcock, an English emigre who settled in Florida, according to a company history. Badcock eventually sold the business to his son Wogan, who established route salesman to service stores, as well as offering financing and collecting time payments both at homes and in local stores.

Conn’s purchased Badcock in 2022. RetailDive.com shows that Badcock had 64 corporate-owned stores and 310 independent dealers when the takeover was completed. Conn’s made the decision to close all 550 stores due to the bankruptcy.
