One person drowned Saturday after driving around a barricade and into a flooded road near the Columbus County line, according to Robeson County EMS.

The drowning occurred on a section of Old Whiteville Road, which is known as Old Lumberton Road in Columbus County.

Rescue crews were first called out for a water rescue Saturday afternoon, an official REMS social media post said. The Allenton Fire Department, the Highway Patrol, Robeson EMS and Robeson Sheriff’s office responded.

Water in the area was swiftly flowing eight to twelve inches deep, but crews quickly found the vehicle. A short time later they discovered the driver had apparently drowned. A wreck from Highway Used Parts was used to recover the car.
