Firearms Confiscated After Shots Fired

A handgun and a rifle were confiscated by Whiteville Police early Saturday after a shots fired call in Brookberry Apartments. No one has been charged in the case.

Lt. Andrew Jackson said WPD was called to the apartment complex around 2:15 a.m. The made contact with the tenants of an apartment where a suspect was reportedly seen entering after the call.

Jackson said there were five juveniles in the home when police arrived. Officers found a Rock River AR-15 and a Ruger 5.7 mm handgun, along with magazines, ammunition and a ski mask. None of the individuals had any knowledge of the firearms, who they belonged to or how they got in the apartment, Jackson said, so WPD seized the weapons as part of the investigation.

In an unrelated case, Jackson said a camouflage bookbag containing 76 twelve-gauge shotgun shells was found under a tree at 407 W. Virgil Street on Sunday afternoon. Authorities are trying to find the owner of the bag.
