Weather Update – Sunday November 17, 2024

Meteorologist Christopher Cawley here with the weather update for Sunday evening, November 17, 2024.

High pressure overhead will push offshore for Monday. This sets up a southwesterly wind flow which will bring warmer temps to the area on Monday.

A strong cold front is approaching the area and will move across Columbus County by Wednesday evening. Moisture ahead of this front means clouds on Tuesday, and scattered showers are possible Tuesday night and Wednesday. I don’t think this will be as widespread as what we saw with the last front. Modeling isn’t really in any sort of agreement. The European group wants to bring more rainfall to the area than the GFS.

Behind the front, the coldest air of the season to date begins to push into the area. Friday looks like it will be quite chilly with highs only in the mid to upper 50s (which is the normal for mid January).

Frost/Freeze Threat: The best possibility of frost comes late Friday night/early Saturday as modeling suggests lows fall to the mid 30s across the area. The coldest spots north and west of town could see temps falling to between 32 and 35… perhaps briefly falling below freezing for a short time around sunrise Saturday.

Tropics: The NHC continues to monitor the dying tropical depression Sara over the Yucatan peninsula. The low pressure center is expected to lift into the Gulf and “open up,” becoming part of a trough of low pressure and bring rain along portions of the Gulf Coast by mid to late week.  It is not expected that Sara will regenerate into a tropical system.

There are no other areas of interest in the tropics.

That’s it for this report. Thanks for reading, and take care!
