Anthony Sumpter will serve 240 to 300 months in prison for the 2025 murder of a woman in her Whiteville apartment.
Sumpter pleaded guilty to second degree murder in Columbus County Superior Court today (Sept.14) according to court documents.
Terry Lashay Thompson was found shot to death in her Covey Run apartment after failing to pick up her children from school on April 15, 2025. Whiteville Police said Sumpter was found in Loris and extradited here to stand trial. He and Thompson had previously been in a relationship.
Sumpter was arrested two days after the killing. WPD was assisted by Columbus County Sheriff’s Office, Horry County Police Department, N.C. State Bureau of Investigation and Alcohol Law Enforcement division. WPD Chief Paul Rockenbach also thanked members of the community ‘who came forward with vital information pertaining to the case.”
Sumpter, 53, was represented by Public Defender Jason David Minnicozzi. Courtney Sanford represented the state. Chief Resident Superior Court Judge C. Ashley Gore gave Sumpter the maximum sentence allowed by law.
