Good afternoon, Meteorologist Christopher Cawley here with a special weather update.
A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY has been issued for Columbus County, from 4 PM Friday through 7 AM Saturday. This is for freezing rain that is likely to occur over the county Friday evening into Friday night.
At this time I expect generally been a trace and 0.05 inch (about the thickness of a penny) of glaze on mainly metal objects (like BBQ grills, vehicles), as well as on tree limbs and branches, power lines, and on untreated road surfaces. I noticed today that DOT has been spraying the brine on area roads, which will help mitigate any travel difficulties — for a while anyway. Bridges and overpasses are especially prone to icing as the freezing rain occurs Friday evening and Friday night.
Again, the amounts I’m expecting over the county are generally light… but could be enough to result in hazardous travel conditions across the area. According to the NWS statement, “difficult travel conditions are possible. The hazardous conditions could impact the Friday evening commute.”
I expect onset of precipitation between 3 PM and 5 PM Friday afternoon, from southwest to northeast. Intermittent LIGHT freezing rain is likely to persist through the mid- to late-evening hours. There may be a break in the freezing rain during the late evening and early overnight hours, with a resumption of light freezing rain or light rain by daybreak Saturday. All precipitation ends as just plain rain during Saturday morning.
Much more information to come in my daily weather blog tomorrow morning. Stay warm!
–Chris
