The sheriff’s office is investigating after someone illegally took out a mortgage on a Smyrna Road property.
The victim of the fraud told detectives after he was notified by the Veterans Administration that someone had taken out a loan in his name through United Mortgage. The suspect allegedly used a fake power of attorney to apply for the loan.
A relative of the victim contacted the Sheriff’s Office to report the incident.
