Cox to Helm Rockingham Community College

Sylvia Cox has accepted the position of president of Rockingham Community College.

A longtime driving force behind multiple programs at Southeastern Community College, Cox will start her new position May 1. Her most recent post at SCC is Executive Vice President and Chief Academic Officer.

In a heartfelt message to the SCC family, she shared, “Working at SCC has been an incredible experience—one that has shaped me both professionally and personally. The lessons I have learned here, the friendships I have built, and the work we have done together to serve students and transform lives in Columbus County will always be a part of me.”

Her deep connection to Columbus County and the impact of SCC’s supportive environment have inspired her lifelong commitment to giving back to the community.

Throughout her tenure at SCC, Dr. Cox has worked to enhance student success and foster community development.

“While I am excited to join Rockingham Community College, there will always be a special place in my heart for Southeastern Community College and the incredible people who make up our SCC family,” said Dr. Cox. “Together, we have made such a difference in Columbus County—and I know that the best is yet to come.”

SCC officials cited her appointment as “a testament to her unwavering commitment to academic excellence and community service.”

 “Dr. Sylvia Cox has been an exceptional leader whose passion and dedication have significantly enriched our campus and our community,” said Dr. Chris English, President of Southeastern Community College. “Her achievements here at SCC are a proud testament to the high-caliber leadership we nurture, and while we will miss her daily presence, we are thrilled to see her take on this important role at Rockingham Community College. Our team is already collaborating to develop a comprehensive plan to fill her vacancy, ensuring that our momentum in advancing student success and community impact remains steadfast.
