Chadbourn may not see a Christmas parade this year.
Town council on Tuesday voted three to one to remove discussions about adding the parade and other Christmas events to the town’s liability insurance. Wednesday was the 60-day deadline to request the Dept. of Transportation to close N.C. 410 for the parade.
Councilman Danny Clewis made the motion, seconded by Councilman Tony Jordan, to remove a consent agenda item on the Christmas activities from the agenda.
Councilwoman Avala Nealy reminded the board that council had refused coverage for a Chadbourn community day event run by a non-profit. (See related story)
Clewis then changed his motion to approve the consent agenda to exclude discussions of the parade and Breakfast with Santa at the Chadbourn depot. The town has previously included those events under its umbrella policy.
Jordan, Clewis and Nealy voted got remove the discussion about the insurance coverage from the agenda, along with a housekeeping measure regarding zoning for a home based business. Councilwoman Coleen Faulk voted to keep the items on the agenda. Councilman Rashad Roberts was not able to attend Tuesday’s meeting.
Delays by town council almost caused cancellation of the Strawberry Festival Parade when similar deadline was missed. Town leaders enlisted the help of Rpe. Brenden Jones to save that parade.
