An illegal gathering spot in Downtown Whiteville has been officially closed by the fire marshal. Fun-ctionz in the 900 block of South Madison Street was the scene of a fight and shootout early Sunday morning. City Fire Marshal Hal Lowder found numerous fire and safety code violations in the building Sunday afternoon, and ordered the business closed.

 

Jaquez Cribbs, age 19 was shot before he crashed into another car at the intersection of JK Powell Boulevard and Washington Street Sunday around 9:00 a.m. Cribbs’s vehicle continued North on JK Powell  Blvd. and collided with a car heading West on Washington Street. Jaquez later died at an area hospital. Whiteville Police Chief Paul Rockenbach said the investigation is ongoing.

 

A family on Sidney Cherry Grove Road reported their home was struck by gunfire late Sunday night. All were in bed and heard two loud noises like gunshots, and observed a car driving away. No one was injured, and only minor damage was reported.
