After less than an hour of deliberation, a Columbus County jury found James Henry Smith, of Lumberton, guilty of Assault with a Deadly Weapon Inflicting Serious Injury and Possession of Firearm by Felon, related to a shooting in May 2022. Special Superior Court Judge Quintin McGee sentenced Smith to 43 – 73 months in prison.

 

Columbus County Commissioners Monday approved a plan to charge municipalities 3% of the tax value for every tax bill serviced by the county. County Manager Eddie Madden said Whiteville and Tabor City had offered to pay a flat rate, but all other towns in the county agreed to a rate of two and a half percent.

 

A Chadbourn woman will spend 78 to 106 months in prison on drug charges. Jacqueline Spivey, 68, has been arrested by the sheriff’s office on drug charges multiple times. She was sentenced as a habitual felon in Superior Court Monday after an undercover investigation in July showed Spivey selling drugs from her home.
