A larceny suspect discovered the hard way that he had picked the wrong neighborhood Sunday when he ended up in the custody of an off-duty Whiteville Police officer.

Victor Parris, 27, is being held under no bond on a charge of attempted larceny. His address was listed as Columbia, S.C. in detention center reports.

Deputies were called to the 3300 block of New Britton Highway around 8 a.m. after multiple calls about a man “behaving erratically.” He allegedly threatened to take a vehicle from the home of WOPD Officer Maria Cruz, then walked away to another property, the report said.

Cruz confronted Parris and detained him while deputies were en route. Multiple residents and a homeowner described the incident to investigators.

Parris initially refused to identify himself, the report said, but deputies discovered his name and that he had only recently been released from jail. Parris was arrested May 14 at the Sam’s Pit Stop in Bolton on a charge of carrying a concealed firearm. He was released on a $500 secured bond on that charge, according to jail records.
