Here’s today’s Bottom Line
I busted my forecast yesterday. I called for “99” at Whiteville, but the high temperature on my weather station on College Street reached 102.6°F. The heat index peaked at an absolutely stupid 117.1°F.
No more of that nonsense now, at least for the foreseeable future, as the heat dome responsible has weakened considerably and shifted more offshore.
This allowed for a little boundary to drop north-to-south yesterday afternoon, and that was responsible for the strong storms that impacted the area.
A weak area of upper-level low pressure will drift rather aimlessly over the southeast US for at least the next 5-7 days. It’s not impressive, by any means, but this will create some areas of lift (along with outflow boundaries, the Piedmont trough, and the seabreeze), which when combined with marked levels of instability, will lead to the potential for afternoon/evening showers and thunderstorms through the entire forecast period.
There will be very little day-to-day variability in our weather conditions, highs, or lows. Highs will generally be in the lower to middle 90s, with heat index values ranging in the lower 100s, with early morning lows in the mid 70s… although some spots may briefly drop to 68-69 degrees during/after thunderstorms. The graphic looks a little comical with “93” and “75” across the board, but that’s really about what it is. In meteorology forecasting we call this a persistence forecast. Some days might only be 92, some 94, but it will all average out to 93. Thus, 93 across the board.
TROPICAL OUTLOOK: Nothing doing in the tropics for the foreseeable future.
