One person was pronounced dead at the hospital and another was transported with critical injuries after a Friday night shooting at Sawmill Apartments in Whiteville.
Whiteville Police Chief Paul Rockenbach said police received almost simultaneous calls about shots fired at the complex and two gunshot victims raring at the hospital around 6:45 p.m. The names of the individuals were not immediately available, the chief said, while family was being notified.
A resident of the complex said he heard multiple gunshots while watching television, and when he looked outside he saw a vehicle speeding away, and another vehicle with significant damage, possibly from gunfire.
WPD secured the scene and the Columbus Regional emergency department was temporarily locked down, as is standard procedure.
The shooting is under investigation by the WPD narcotics and criminal investigations divisions.
