Labor Day is Monday, and Columbus is going all out with events over the weekend. Shop until you drop, get groovy at the Lake, or sign up to do a sing-along for an awesome organization. Opportunities await in this week’s edition of the Good News. Let’s take a look at what’s going on near you.
The Columbus County Farmers Market will be doing a little traveling on Saturday, Aug. 30. The facility will be holding a pop-up event at the Veterans Memorial Park of America from 8 a.m. -1 p.m. The fee is now only $10 for vendors, and all sellers are welcome to set up this weekend.
The park will be having a Rock-A-Thon during the market to raise money for rocking chairs and other items needed, so consider making a donation to Veterans Community Outreach Center while you shop. The VMPA can be found at 6354 James B. White Highway South in Whiteville.
This Sunday will be the last service of the season for the Lakeside Ministry at the Campground Pavilion in Lake Waccamaw. It will begin at 9 a.m., and Reverend Dave Heller will be both preaching and singing. The venue is located at 3010 Canal Cove Road.
‘Get Groovy’ at the Lake on Sunday, Aug. 31, from 1-4 p.m. with Curtis Martin and the Community Art Journey. Dress up like a hippie and get creative as you draw 60’s themed images on a box from the era.

The $10 fee will get you a box, a sack with a gel pen, a peace sign necklace, a bandanna, candy from the 1960’s and other ‘far out’ items. Those interested can call 401.419.2291 to sign up.
If you’re looking for something fun to do for Labor Day, the Lake Waccamaw community will be having their annual town wide yard sale on Sept. 1. The event will begin at 7 a.m., and those participating will set up in their yards, driveways, and garages throughout the town. Some folks will be holding sales on Saturday and Sunday, so be sure to catch those early bird specials.
The First Baptist Church of Lake Waccamaw and the Wooded Acres community will also have secondhand treasures up for grabs. Just look for the flags, signs, and friendly faces.
For those who would like to be a part of the Labor Day event but don’t have the room, the Lake Waccamaw Depot Museum is offering spaces on their lawn for a $15 donation to the facility. Those interested can call 910.770.6017 to reserve your spot. Be sure to bring your own tables, chairs, and tents.

Seniors at East Columbus High School enjoyed the old tradition of painting their parking spaces last weekend before school started on Monday. Mr. John Grice was praised by ECHS for sweeping lot before the students took to the pavement with their paints and brushes.

Folks can eat at the Collard Wagon food truck, participate in the First Saturday Market fishing contest, gain a new animal during the Livestock Swap, or shop the vendors and artisans set up at the market.
