Storm total rainfall for Whiteville on Sunday was 3.51 inches.

Here’s today’s Bottom Line

Generally quiet weather for the work week over Columbus County. High pressure building in behind a cold front will bring a mostly sunny and pleasant day today with highs a tick or two either side of 80. It will be rather breezy today with northeast wind speeds into the 20s mph at times.

With the old cold front lingering offshore, a small wave of low pressure is expected to develop along this front and scoot off to sea. At the same time, high pressure will build down from the north and create a northeast wind flow. This is a classic “wedge” scenario with cooler, moist air damming up against the mountains and being trapped at the surface, while a moist, warmer, southerly flow rides “up and over” the cooler air trapped at the surface. This sets the stage for lots of clouds and a few spotty showers for Tuesday and Tuesday night, possibly into Wednesday. The best rain chances will be along the coast but I’m not going to rule out an isolated rain shower at times here as well. Not a washout, but enough to run the wipers once or twice.

The wedge appears to be short-lived as a shortwave kind of pushes things along for Thursday into Friday and Saturday with more high pressure in control. Plenty of sunshine and temps running about 5-ish degrees below normal. A word of caution, though, that modeling tends to break down these wedge patterns a bit too soon, so it wouldn’t surprise me if Thursday turns out more cloudy than sunny. We’ll see. Either way, quiet weather this week with no major weather systems to be concerned about.

TROPICS:

In a truly RARE occurrence for the first weeks of September, there are NO TROPICAL AREAS OF INTEREST! The disturbance I had been watching last week went *poof* as dry air and shear just tore the wave to pieces; at this time there is just a small area of showers and thunderstorms at the old circulation center.

There is no tropical threat to the Carolinas through at least the middle of September.
