The Good News Oct. 8-14

The ‘BER’ months are finally here, and Columbus County is rolling out the red carpet for all those amazing holiday events. Take a walk on a haunted trail, pet some ponies, or volunteer your time for the CBA’s Christmas ministry. The Good News has you covered from Halloween to Santa’s arrival.

The CCN Trick or Treat Guide has been posted. If your church or organization is having a fall festival, safe night or trunk or treat for Halloween, we want to know about it. The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission will be conducting surveys in Lake Waccamaw throughout the week. Survey crews will be using spotlights after sunset along the Canal Cove and Waccamaw Shores areas. The Town of LW put out a statement for residents not to be alarmed by their presence.  

The ‘Ponies and Pumpkins’ event for The Wild Horse Preserve at Grace Wynds Farm will be happening every Sunday in October from 1-4 p.m. Admission is $10, and visitors will get to enjoy hayrides, a petting zoo, the pumpkin patch, petting ponies, and playing in the Wild Horse Village. 

You can also checkout pumpkin decorating, pizza dinner, and hand-led pony rides for an addition expense. All proceeds go to The Wild Horse Preserve.

Grissettown-Longwood Fire Department will be opening their haunted trail for another season of spookiness every Friday and Saturday evening from 7-10 p.m. during the month of October and from 7-10 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 31, for Halloween night.    

Tickets are $20 per person, and you can get yours by calling 910.287.3030 or by visiting www.grissettownfire.com.  The station can be found at 758 Longwood Road in Ocean Isle Beach.

Premier Living and Rehab Center in Lake Waccamaw gave a big shout out to Lake Waccamaw Presbyterian Church. The church donated a ton of Bingo prizes for residents at the home last week. Thank you LWPC for caring about those folks.  

Let the Community Art Journey help you unwind every Wednesday from 1-3 p.m. at the facility. Drop in, relax, and explore creative activities like art journaling, Zen drawing, card making, mindful painting, and creative expression for stress relief.

It’s volunteer time for the Columbus Baptist Association’s annual Christmas Toy Store. The organization needs help setting up and running the store between Monday, Dec. 8 through Saturday, Dec. 13.  

Those interested in lending a helping hand can reach out to Reverend Dave Heller through Facebook Messenger, or you can call the CBA office at 910.642.2155. The Toy Store is a ministry that helps low-income families buy Christmas presents for their children for dimes on the dollar each holiday season.   

Are you ready for some carnival food, a Ferris wheel, and the Demolition Derby? The Columbus County Agricultural is in town through Oct. 12. Admission is $8 per person.  

The fair will also have Special Friends Day on Oct. 8 at 9 a.m., Kindergarten Day on Oct. 9 at 9 a.m., and Senior Day on Oct. 10 at 1 p.m. For a full schedule of events, to purchase tickets online, or to find out about vendor opportunities, visit the website at www.columbuscountyfair.com. The fairgrounds can be found at 886 Prison Camp Road in Whiteville.  

WVOE Radio will be presenting lunch and a show at Brown Street Station on Oct. 10. at 10:30 a.m. Live entertainment will be provided by Benny and the Gospel Angels. Admission and parking are free. 

A spot fish sandwich and a drink will be up for grabs for $7, and all proceeds will go to the Gospel station to keep it up and running. Brown Street Station is located at 202 North Brown Street in Chadbourn.  

Carolyn’s Kaleidoscope for Kids and the Columbus County Library will be having Story Time for school-aged children on Oct. 15 at 4 p.m. The event will be held at the library’s main branch located at 407 North J.K. Powell Boulevard in Whiteville. 

Lake Waccamaw Depot Museum will be receiving a big honor on Oct. 17 at 10 a.m. The Reuben Brown House Preservation Society will be presenting a Historic Landmark Plaque to the museum. A small reception will follow the unveiling of the marker’s permanent place. The depot’s address is 201 Flemington Drive. 

 The Holliness Tabernacle Church of Tabor City will be having a fish plate sale on Oct. 17. Plates are $10 each and will include fish, baked beans, slaw, bread, and a dessert. If you would like to purchase tickets, you can contact Robert Nealey or Tim Bass via Facebook. Proceeds will go towards helping support the church.   

A silent auction for Hunter Burney is currently running at Natmoore Baptist Church. The 10-year-old was diagnosed with Open Angle Glaucoma and must undergo critical surgeries to repair the condition or run the risk of going blind. His parents, David and Dena Burney, will be taking time off work to make the three-hour journey with the youngster and will need the funds to cover travel expenses and lengthy overnight stays.  

The church has pulled together item contributions and is currently accepting bids via the “Silent Auction for Hunter Burney” Facebook page through Oct. 17. Please consider bidding in the auction, or if you would like to make a monetary donation to the family, call Brooke Hinson at 910.874.2722.  

It’s time for the fifty-third annual Waccamaw Siouan Pow Wow, and the tribe is excited to once again share their rich culture, family, and traditions with you. Come out and enjoy food, tribal dancing, vendors, and learn all about the history of the Waccamaw Siouan. 

The entry fee is $8 for the school day, $5 for Friday night after 4 p.m., and $10 on Saturday. The event will run Oct. 17-18 at the Tribal Grounds located at 7239 Old Lake Road in Bolton. 

The Annie Catherine Pridgen Community Development Foundation is partnering with the Food Bank of Central and Eastern N.C. for a food distribution drive on Oct. 18 at Jerusalem Chapel Freewill Baptist Church. There is no cost, no I.D., or proof of income needed for assistance.   

Pastor Eric McCullum and his congregation help provide the volunteer power that makes the ACP’s monthly food drive possible, but new volunteers and supporters are welcome to lend a hand. Lake Waccamaw Methodist Church will be having a the “Connecting Hearts for Jon David” community event on Sunday, Oct. 19, starting at 3 p.m. Jon David Furlow was born at the end of February with three congenital heart defects and diagnosed with Taussig Bing. The infant has remained at Duke Medical Center, undergoing numerous surgeries, and his parents, Justin and Mallory Furlow, spend most of their time at their son’s side.  

The church will serve a spaghetti plate dinner from 3-5:30 p.m. You are welcome to pick up to-go boxes or sit and eat. At 6 p.m., they will all join together to have a special time of worship music provided by Willing Heart and members of Port City Collective. Any and all donations are welcome, and one hundred percent of the money raised will go to Jon David and his family. Lake Waccamaw Methodist is located at 506 Lake Shore Drive.  

The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences will host the Waccamaw Siouan Heritage Celebration on Oct. 25 from 1-6 p.m. Learn about contemporary and traditional dance styles with demonstrations, along with hands-on activities and seminars that celebrate who they are today.  

The NCMNS can be found at 415 South Madison Street in Whiteville.  

Come worship with New Life Community Church on Oct. 25 at 6 p.m. The church will be holding a preaching and singing service called “This Gospel” in the Tractor Supply parking lot.  

There will be free hot dogs and water from 5-6 p.m., and candy bags will be available for the kids. Everyone is welcome. Tractor Supply can be found at 26 Whiteville Plaza.  

Columbus County Parks and Recreation is having Veterans Day Coloring Contest to celebrate and honor veterans through creativity. Age divisions are 3-5 years old, 6-9 years old, and 10-12 years old.
