Checking Station Lands Honduran Murder Suspect

Wilbor Alexis Castro Dominguez

Deputies working a sobriety checkpoint arrested an international fugitive wanted for murder Thursday.

Wilbor Alexis Castro Dominguez, 29, of Loris, was visibly impaired when he was stopped after a brief chase, the sheriff’s office said,

Dominguez was driving a dark Hummer that approached the checking station at Swamp Fox Highway and Cherry Grove Road, the CCSO said in a press release. He avoided the checking station, turning down Cherry Grove and leading deputies on a chase of several miles. He finally came to a stop at Peanut Worley and Cherry Grove.

Dominguez had “red, glassy eyes and the strong odor of alcohol” when deputies approached the Hummer. He admitted that he had been drinking, and failed two voluntary roadside sobriety tests.

Deputies saw several open containers of alcohol in the Hummer, along with a Glock handgun that had been converted to fully automatic. Modifying a firearm with a “switch” without permits is a federal crime.

As deputies continued their investigation, Columbus Central Dispatch advised that Dominguez was wanted by INTERPOL for homicide in Honduras, the release said. Deputies immediately made contact with INTERPOL and coordinated with Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to confirm the warrant and initiate a detainer. He was held under an immigration detainer and charged with possession of a weapon of mass destruction, driving while impaired, driving while license revoked, fictitious registration and an open container violation.

Dominguez blew a .10 on a Breathalyzer, .02 above the legal limit.

Columbus County Sheriff’s Office is working closely with the U.S. Department of Justice who is coordinating with international authorities to begin extradition proceedings.
